WHAT DOES A DSP DO?
DAILY LIVING
A DSP provides the basic needs needed for any person to live a fulfilling life. This can look like teaching a person how to brush their teeth, helping them in and out of their wheelchair, taking care of the hygiene needs, cooking meals, and more. When you provide this type of care, you are providing a life that the person would not be able to live without your support.
COMMUNITY INTEGRATION
We all want to be part of our communities. A DSP provides an opportunity for individuals to have access to their communities. Many individuals with DD cannot drive or transport themselves. You are the catalyst to connect them to the world. This looks like going out to dinner, going shopping, volunteering with them, going bowling, and just living life with them!
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION
Many individuals with Developmental Disabilities rely on medication in order to live a quality life, and in some cases, they are life-saving medications. A DSP is trained and certified to pass medications to individuals so that they can live a happy, healthy life. Don’t worry, we give you all the tools and training that you need!
ADVOCACY
At The Society, we want to be a voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves, but we also want to give a voice to those who can! As a DSP, you are an advocate for people with developmental disabilities.
FRIENDSHIP
When you become a DSP, you are starting the journey of creating brand new friendships that will impact you for the rest of your life. You will quickly learn that this job is more than just a job. It becomes part of your life and the people you support become more than just “clients” that you serve.
HAVE FUN!
What other job do you get to have the opportunity to just live life and have fun with others? There is so much joy in the developmental disabilities field, and you GET to be part of it! We have had DSPs go on vacation with individuals, go to camp, travel, go to shows, and more!
